The 2016 G7 summit will take place in the historic city of Shima in the Mie prefecture of Japan. Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe announced the location on June 5, 2015, before leaving Tokyo for the 2015 G7 summit at Schloss Elmau in Germany. The site was chosen from eight candidate sites for its "cultural tradition and beautiful nature," and its proximity to the 2,000-year-old Ise Shrine, dedicated to the ancestral deities of the Japanese imperial family. No date has been announced.
