April 23, 2009
At a cabinet meeting in Rome on April 23, Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi received the go-ahead to propose to the relocation of the 2009 G8 Summit to the region of Abruzzo and to redirect expenditures from developing the original venue, the island of La Maddalena off the northeast coast of Sardinia, to reconstruction efforts in l'Aquila, devastated by an earthquake on April 6. Berlusconi must consult the other members of the G8 before the change can be confirmed.
