In 2009, when Italy hosts the G8 summit, it will be on the island of Maddalena, a small island north of Sardinia, according to Prime Minister Romano Prodi and Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema.
La Maddalena is the biggest of a group of small islands located between Sardinia and Corsica. The United States has a military base for nuclear military submarines on the island, but the naval base will have been dismantled before the summit takes place. Local facilities include a military school on the base and a new city theatre.
Italy last hosted the summit in 2001, in Genoa.
