October 8, 2008
Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini has announced that the 2009 summit will be on July 8-10 on the Sardinian island of La Maddalena. Although this location had been decided upon in July 2007 by the previous government of Romano Prodi, on election in the spring of 2008, Silvio Berlusconi considered holding some or all of the leaders meetings in Naples, where he hosted his first summit in 1994, or on a cruise ship that would sail into the port of Naples. However, these options were finally determined to be too complicated.
Italy last hosted the summit in 2001, in Genoa.
