The European Union in the G8The evolving role that the EU plays within the G8 framework reflects its growth in power and influence as it gains increasing authority to speak for the member states. Indeed, the success of the Single European Market and continuous progress towards 'an ever closer union' in the spheres of economic, monetary, and political activity set good examples of the merits of cooperation and coordination on which the existence of the G8 is premised. However, as witnessed in similar instances where issues of supranationalism are confronted by those of national sovereignty, tremendous internal debate accompanies the participation of the EU in the western summits.
