WORLD NEWS: Canada
CANADA TO PUSH ATLANTIC FREE TRADE ZONE
Prime Minister Jean Chretien is likely to press his drive for a
transatlantic free trade deal at talks with European Union leaders
at next week's G-7 summit, Canadian officials said yesterday.
Chretien will discuss Canadian-EU relations during a breakfast
meeting with French President Jacques Chirac, who holds the rotating
EU presidency, and Jacques Santer, president of the European
Commission. ''I'm sure they'll discuss the broad issue of reforging
transatlantic links,'' one senior official said. Chretien, this
year's chairman of the Group of Seven leading industrial nations, is
hosting the annual G-7 summit in Halifax from June 15 to 17.
