Summit Performance Assessments by Issue: Land Mines

The G8 praised the various current undertakings to ban anti-personnel landmines, welcomed the implementation of domestic legislation to effect such an end, called for all States to adhere to the Protocol on Mines, Booby Traps and Other Devices, and called for the international community to develop the necessary technology to assist in mine detection and awareness, and victim assistance.

While the former statements indicate that the G8 is genuinely concerned about the issue of landmines, the G8 did not successfully set the stage for a plan of action that would signal the route that the international community should be taking (neither the Ottawa Process nor the Geneva Process were singled out). Thus, a global ban has not been explicitly supported, even in the face of Lyon's landmine commitment: "to spare no effort in securing a global ban on the scourge represented by the proliferation and the indiscriminate use of anti-personnel landmines."
