G7 Water Coalition Action to Address Water Pollution
April 24, 2026
[pdf]
Building on the achievements of recent G7 Presidencies, including the launch of the G7 Water Coalition under the 2024 Italian Presidency and the adoption of its three-year workplan under the 2025 Canadian Presidency, we affirm our shared determination to prevent pollution at source, and to conserve, protect, sustainably manage and restore water resources and aquatic ecosystems. We also recognize interconnections and co-benefits between water, energy, food, ecosystems and long-term prosperity.
In this context, we acknowledge that water pollution, including plastic and chemical pollution, such as PFAS, constitutes a challenge for many governments, public authorities and stakeholders in the water sector worldwide. At the same time, the burden associated with water pollution can be significant.
Addressing this challenge is therefore enhanced by strengthened exchange of best practices, scientific research and knowledge building, sustained investment in innovation, infrastructure, water resources and wastewater management strategies, building on relevant international frameworks.
In light of these considerations, we commit to combat water pollution and to work through the G7 Water Coalition to actively share practices, knowledge, expertise and innovative solutions aimed at better detecting and addressing pollution, among the G7 as well as internationally.
In this regard, we will support innovative solutions and approaches aimed at reducing pollution at source, including nature-based solutions, and at promoting efficient water use and wastewater treatment. We will also strengthen data sharing and management, improved interoperability of monitoring systems, and the development of predictive, early-warning and intervention models. In line with the G7 Water Coalition Workplan adopted at the 2025 Toronto G7 Energy and Environment Minister’s Meeting, we will work together to raise the awareness of the impacts of water pollutants and the potential of innovative responses in relevant international fora and processes, in particular in this important year for the international agenda on water action.
To help accelerate progress and foster international mobilisation, an Innovation Day will be convened in 2026 by the G7 and G20 Presidencies to showcase promising approaches and technologies that can contribute to improved water security, including through resource efficiency, wastewater management, water reuse and solutions to tackle water pollutants. This event will bring together governments, private-sector actors, research institutions and other relevant partners and stakeholders.
