First Meeting of the G8 Digital Opportunity Taskforce (dot force)

November 15, 2000

  1. The first meeting of the G8 Digital Opportunity Taskforce (dot force) will take place on November 27 (Mon) and 28 (Tue) in Tokyo (New Takanawa Prince Hotel).

  2. The Government of Japan, as the G8 Presidency, has invited to this meeting one government and one private-sector representative from each G8 country (and one from the European Commission), and representatives from developing countries (Bolivia, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania); international organizations (the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Economic and Social Council, International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); business organizations (the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Global Business Dialogue on Electronic Commerce (GBDe), the Global Information Infrastructure Commission (GIIC)); non-profit organizations; and other organizations. From Japan, Mr. Yoshiji Nogami, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs (chairperson of the dot force), and Mr. Taizou Nishimuro, Chairman of the Board, Toshiba Corporation, will participate in the meeting.

  3. The meeting aims at fostering a common understanding of the current state and challenges of the digital divide, discussing the outline of the report, and deciding on a concrete work schedule. Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori will deliver an opening speech.

  4. In the Okinawa Charter on the Global Information Society (Okinawa Charter) released at the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit Meeting in July this year, the establishment of the Digital Opportunity Taskforce (dot force) was agreed to bridge the international digital divide. It will promote discussions and policy dialogue with stake holders, work to raise awareness of the international digital divide, examine inputs from the private sector, and report its findings and activities to the G8 Sherpas before the next meeting in Genoa.
